The Wall Lake City Council is seeking public input on a proposed housing addition for the community. According to Clerk, Chris Rodman, officials are investigating three potential sites for the expansion. One of those sites is the baseball field on the west side of town. Rodman says there are several aspects of the property that make it an attractive option.
Rodman adds the overall cost of the project would also be significantly lower with less than 500 feet of road to be constructed. The East Sac County (ESC) Community School District currently owns the ballfield, but early indications are that they would be willing to sell the unused diamond at a significantly reduced price compared to the other two properties the council is considering. City officials understand that some residents may be opposed to the field being replaced by residential lots, and Rodman encourages individuals with concerns about this possibility to make them known to city leaders.
A cost estimate for the addition is not yet available, but he says it will be higher than many people expect once the price of land purchases, road construction, infrastructure installation and other various factors are tallied. Rodman says this is not a moneymaking venture for the city. Rather, it is an opportunity to see the community continue to expand and develop.
As it stands, the council does not have a timeline for when lots would be available for purchase or even where the lots will be. Once city officials reach an agreement with landowners, the council will need to hold public hearings to complete the purchase. Then, the land will need to be annexed within city limits and additional hearings will be required before the city can borrow the required funds. Rodman says residents should expect to see the proposed development plans on the agenda into 2022.
The Wall Lake City Council continues to develop plans for the public sale of items from the interior of the former East Sac County (ESC) Elementary School. Clerk, Chris Rodman, says they have received multiple requests from residents and past students regarding specific objects from the oldest sections of the building. Rather than just selling them to the first buyer that asks, the council is organizing an open sale in the interest of fairness.
Everything from old doors and radiators to clocks and whiteboards will be sold. According to Rodman, they are not anticipating a lot of revenue from the sale, and any money raised will go back to support future projects at the former school. He says these items will need to be disposed of regardless, and it is more efficient to do so locally rather than seeking out potential buyers.
The Wall Lake City Council has put out a request for proposals for repair work on the community’s water tower. Clerk, Chris Rodman, says they recently learned of the potential issues while a contractor was on site repairing insulation on the structure.
According to Rodman, any work on the tower is usually hard on the entire water system, so city officials are hoping to combine several years of expected maintenance into a single project. If the tower pipe needs to be replaced, this would provide them an opportunity to do just that.
Depending on what work is deemed necessary, the total cost for the project could be anywhere between a few thousand dollars on the low end up to $135,000 on the high side. Rodman says they usually spread this work out over several years to lessen the impact on the budget, but an influx of federal money from the American Rescue Plan could cover up to 80 percent of the expenses.
