The Minister of State with responsibility for the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Malcolm Noonan described the current status of the Curlew as “one of the most difficult and pressing conservation concerns of our time”. “The Curlew is a link with the wild Ireland of past generations, and the farmers and landowners who support our remaining breeding populations of Curlew are vital to its future,” he said.
Curlew are beautiful birds that have played a significant role in Ireland s heritage being represented in placenames, storytelling, poetry, music, coinage and folk lore. They are a large wader with greyish brown colouring with dark streaking standing tall on long bluish legs with a majestic long down curved bill, their call is evocative and easily recognisable.  ....

In a bid to save Eurasian Curlew from becoming extirpated in Ireland, the Irish National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is recruiting 30 staff to join its Curlew Conservation Programme for this spring and summer.
Eurasian Curlew is one of Ireland s most endangered birds, having suffered an appalling 96% slump in its breeding population since 1990. Fewer than 150 pairs are thought to remain; in the late 1980s, this was as high as 5,500. At this rate of decline, NPWS predicts that the species could be lost as a breeder in Ireland within a decade. ....

Green Party Ministers Pippa Hackett and Malcolm Noonan TD have combined, along with their respective departments, to drive forward plans to conserve the iconic curlew. The Ministers this week announced that the recruitment of 30 contractors to work with the Curlew Conservation Programme around the country would start immediately.

The Curlew Conservation Programme is primarily run and funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, which is under Minister Noonan’s remit, but an extra injection of money from Minister Hackett’s Department of Agriculture has enabled the field officers to be put in place earlier in the year than would otherwise have been the case.  ....
