Minister Hackett welcomes half a million bonus payment to hen harrier farmers


996 farmers have this week shared nearly half a million euro in Hen Harrier Project bonus payments.
Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Pippa Hackett has welcomed the news, saying that the payments are “in recognition of these farmers’ success in delivering habitats for hen harriers and other wildlife”.
The payments, which total €483,927, are paid under the €25 million hen harrier programme funded by Minister Hackett’s department under the Rural Development Programme.

The minister said that in a week “dominated by reports of fires in our upland areas, it is a relief to get some good news”. ....

Minister Hackett joins with Minister Noonan in effort to conserve curlew

Ministers Pippa Hackett and Malcolm Noonan have combined, along with their respective departments, to drive forward plans to conserve the iconic curlew.
Minister Noonan’s National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has advertised for 30 contractors to work with the Curlew Conservation Programme, with the intention that the work would start immediately.
The programme is primarily run and funded by the NPWS, which is under Minister Noonan’s remit, but an extra injection of money from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has enabled the field officers to be put in place earlier in the year than would otherwise have been the case. ....
