Internal squabble within Bengal BJP rises after assembly election rout

BJP s Top Brass Scrambles Amidst Mass Exodus of Workers in Bengal

LIVES OF OTHERS: Some place between past & present

Mamata Banerjee s fate in West Bengal Assembly election 2021 will be sealed today

Was the coronavirus pandemic an issue in Bengal elections? The COVID-19 pandemic, and the response from both the state and centre, has been missing from the political rhetoric from either side. Part of the reason is that the official figures peg the total cases in the state at a little over 800,000 and the deaths at over 11,000. However, there is no dearth of anecdotes on how the data from the state, too, may be under-reported just like in other states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Both TMC and BJP have been negligent, to say the least, in recent months as they went about holding political rallies where the guidelines like social distancing and wearing masks were all but ignored. The cases have seen significant increase in both infections and fatality.

Assembly polls: Trends indicate TMC heading for a huge victory in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 2 The ruling Trinamool Congress looks set to retain power in West Bengal with its candidates leading in 202 of the state’s 292 seats that went to poll against the BJP’s 79, as trends were available for 286 seats. Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee was, however, trailing her former protege-turned-BJP rival Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram by over 8,000 votes. Belying expectations of a tight contest, the TMC candidates appeared galloping to victory, and, if the current trends hold, the party will easily form its third successive government in the state.
