Mumbai: Over eight months ago, a 36-year-old undertrial prisoner was brutally killed inside Jalgaon sub-jail in Maharashtra. The prisoner, Ravindra Jagtap, was allegedly brutally beaten up by five prison officials â including the prison superintendent. The severity of the violence was explicitly captured in the autopsy report which showed 20 âfresh contusionsâ all over his body and a team of three doctors conclusively determined that the death was a result of a âblunt traumaâ caused to his chest. ....

Mumbai: Six months after 32-year-old convict Asghar Ali Mansoori died by suicide inside the Nashik central prison, alleging persistent torture at the hands of prison officials, another prisoner has attempted to take his own life in the same jail. Thirty-year-old Avinash Jadhav was, however, rushed to the Nashik civil hospital and his life was saved. Jadhav too has accused the jail officials of harassing him for close to a decade. He claims that more recently, he was targeted for deposing against the officials and supporting Mansooriâs allegations of torture. ....

India Covid Crisis: Prison officials seek to stop jails from overcrowding

The ongoing Covid crisis has resulted in a strange situation with the head of the prisons department in Maharashtra telling top police officials to only arrest criminals indulging in serious offences and not those engaged in petty crimes including gambling and prohibition related ones.
Sunil Ramanand, the additional director-general, prisons, has written to senior police officers in the state asking for help in decongesting about 60 jails in the state to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among the inmates and the prison staff. Most of the jails are overcrowded and there is hardly any room to ensure social distancing. ....
