President Biden celebrated Earth Day by announcing his Administration’s goal to decrease CO2 emissions by 50-52% from a baseline of 2005 by 2030. While that undoubtedly is an aggressive goal, remember that the prior Paris Accord commitment was to reduce CO2 emissions by 26-28%. The real commitment is an additional 24% reduction from 2005. Coal unit retirements alone are projected to meet the initial Paris 26-28% CO2 reductions. Additional coal retirements and fuel switching to natural gas should achieve a large portion of the President’s additional commitment. While not yet a complete replacement for coal and natural gas electricity generation, 39.7 gigawatts (GW) of new electricity generating capacity will start commercial operation in 2021, reference a ....

I first started working on climate change in the 1990s, advising President Clinton as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers in the run-up to the 1997 Kyoto Conference of Parties. We understood that the potential cost of climate change was significant.
Of course, we know what the trajectory has been ever since. Over the past 30 years, the incidence of natural disasters has dramatically increased, and the actual and future potential cost to the economy has skyrocketed. If left unaddressed, climate change will leave us grappling with fundamental questions like: What are the consequences for our coastal cities and communities? What will happen to our farmers and cost of food after droughts and flooding decimate farml ....

Cleaning up America’s power plants is essential to meeting the president’s 2030 climate target. And beyond their massive contribution to the climate crisis, power plants also cause tens of thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of illnesses. Power plants emitted 1.6 billion tons of CO
2 in 2019 25 percent of U.S. heat-trapping emissions, second only to motor vehicles. They also released nearly a million tons of sulfur dioxide and nearly 900,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, as well as mercury and dozens of other hazardous air pollutants. And they created more than 500,000 tons of toxic water pollutants and tens of millions of tons of coal ash.  ....
