Chang, the head cheesemaker at Haystack Mountain Creamery in Longmont, discovered her lifelong love affair with the dairy product when her uncle brought single Kraft cheese from the U.S. during one of his trips. A native of Taiwan, Chang, who came to the U.S. at the age of 18 and worked in the restaurant industry, left that job to work at a goat farm, where she learned about cheesemaking. ....

Press Release – Champions of Cheese Awards New Zealand Specialist Cheesemakers Association (NZSCA) is pleased to confirm that judging of the NZ Champions of Cheese Awards 2021 will go ahead in Hamilton this weekend. Planning for this year’s Awards always involved a contingency in the case that Covid-19 prompted a lockdown in Auckland. The contingency, judging at Hamilton’s WINTEC Rotokauri campus will swing into action. Assuming the country outside of Auckland stays at Level 2, judging will occur at WINTEC under Level 2 on Saturday 20 February for yoghurt and butter and Sunday 21 February for cheese. Judging on both days will occur with appropriate social distancing, sanitiser and other health authority recommended measures. ....

Then we stopped at the local hotel and I gaped at its painted garden-bed statues, bigger than garden gnomes, of dark skinned, patched-clothed men toiling, one with a spade, another a wheelbarrow, others hoeing and raking. The second time I went to Bapsfontein, a few decades later, was to write about oddball Country-and-Western braais at the same hotel. The photographer and I passed, at the entrance, a man with a bulletproof vest under his open pink windcheater, the handle and nose of a firearm evident.
