A CLARE community have rallied together to raise funds for a former county councillor whose family home went up in flames last Christmas. The Clarecastle home of former Fianna Fáil representative Bernard ‘Bomber’ Hanrahan was destroyed on the night of December 27. Fortunately Bernard managed to escape the blaze when he was alerted to the danger by his dog Daisy. However the fire destroyed the house in Barntick which has been in the Hanrahan family for generations. Now in an effort to help rebuild the family home a fundraising appeal has been launched. The United for The Bomber and Daisy campaign is aiming to raise €30,000, with close to €5,000 of that target raised just one day after the GoFundMe page went live. ....

Bomber (Bernard Hanrahan) was alerted by his dog Daisy to the blaze and managed to escape before the flames reached his bedroom. However, pictures and memories spanning three generations were lost in the fire. Lawyers representing those bereaved and injured in a series of Troubles-related atrocities have written to MPs on the cross-party scrutiny body in a bid to intensify pressure on the British Government. The move comes ahead of the latest stage in a legal bid by victims to sue Libya for supplying Semtex to the IRA. ....
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said getting justice for victims of IRA attacks linked to Libyan explosives will be very tough . He was speaking as he was grilled by senior MPs at the House of Commons Liaison Committee yesterday. The IRA received secret shipments of weapons from Libya during Muammar Gaddafi s time as dictator, including Semtex for several notorious bombings. Previous efforts to secure payouts for victims of the paramilitary group s campaign have failed, despite Libyan assets having been frozen in the UK. Around $11bn was seized by the UK government after the 2011 collapse of the Gaddafi regime. Ministers are facing calls to release a report, by government-appointee William Shawcross, on compensation for victims of IRA attacks involving Libyan-supplied weapons. When quizzed yesterday by Simon Hoare, chair of the NI Affairs Committee, Mr Johnson said there are many great difficulties in terms of getting a satisfactory solution. ....
