The Day - Norwich program Saturday honors WWI Doughnut Girls by serving up period doughnuts

Norwich  City Historian Dale Plummer has connected the dots meticulously to make a solid connection between National Doughnut Day Saturday and the effort to resume fundraising to restore the city’s World War I howitzer and create a lasting memorial to local soldiers of that war.
Plummer, chairman of the WWI Memorial Committee, recalled seeing a restored WWI field stove in operation at a re-enactment event and thought it might be interesting to bring that to Norwich. He learned that National Doughnut Day is June 5 and that it’s origins are rooted in the work by organizations to boost morale of U.S. troops fighting in France from 1917-18. ....

Elgo recalled the incident during a forum Tuesday at Norwich Free Academy that featured several prominent Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders discussing their heritage and the importance of mentoring young students as future leaders. In the program, NFA students in the Asian Cultures Club organized the event as part of the school’s marking of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. ....

The Day - Sikh Art Gallery serves as educational tool for local community - News from southeastern Connecticut

Norwich  It s called the Sikh Art Gallery, but owner Swaranjit Singh Khalsa is eager to point out to visitors that his gallery is as much about education as it is art.
Khalsa opened the doors to the gallery at 7 Clinic Drive for an open house on Saturday, talking to visitors about the various aspects of the Sikh religion and history, handing out brochures and answering questions from the curious.
This community is new and the religion is pretty young compared to other world religions, Khalsa said. So, we need to have opportunities where we can explain to people who we are and where we re from. ....
