Council not involved in Heritage kangaroo cull decision
Community members may have seen the story in today’s Herald Sun (‘Big Gulf Over Roos On Course’) regarding a decision by Heritage Golf and Country Club in Chirnside Park to not go ahead with the culling of kangaroos on their site.
This story appears to be based on a media release from Heritage Golf and Country Club that refers to a ‘Council approved cull’.
Council wishes to advise it was not involved in any decision to approve the culling of kangaroos at the Heritage Golf and Country Club. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), not Council, is responsible for managing wildlife in Victoria, which was correctly stated in the Herald Sun story mentioned above.

Victorian health authorities remain “alert but not alarmed” at the prospect of a new Covid-19 case after the discovery of viral fragments in wastewater sparked an order to more than 240 people to immediately retest. The urgent warning was followed by news that a seventh mass vaccination clinic will open in the Melbourne suburb of Cranbourne next week, the same day all Victorians over the age of 50 will be eligible for a Covid-19 jab. The 246 people from an extensive list of suburbs who were told to get retested on Thursday include recently returned interstate travellers from designated red or orange zone areas and four close contacts of the positive case who travelled from Perth to Melbourne on flight QF778 last week.
Locals rally to save much-loved kangaroo from cull30/04/2021|5min
Locals in Chirnside Park lined the grounds of the Heritage Golf and Country Club on Tuesday evening after being informed a kangaroo cull would be taking place – including a much-loved elderly male roo known as ‘Big Al’ or ‘Mr Scarface’.
Manfred Zabinskas, who rescued and rehabilitated this kangaroo, spoke with Sky News about the issue.
Mr Zabinskas said the kangaroos were “certainly in danger on the Tuesday night” but now they “don’t know”.
“It was all short notice, residents received notification only that very day that there would be shooting in the evening – which was just astonishing,” he said.
