Pakistani feminists say they are determined to fight blasphemy charges filed in mid-April by militant Islamic groups opposed to their International Women’s Day rallies held on March 8.
They rejected as “totally false” blasphemy allegations based on the social media postings of their rallies.
“We’ve seen a weaponization of blasphemy increase,” said Farieha Aziz of the Karachi-based Women’s Action Forum. “There’s a pattern since 2017 of using it against dissidents in particular.”
Until recently, Aziz said, social dissidents were labeled “anti-state” and “anti-Islamic,” with the blasphemy charges taking opposition to a whole new level.

KARACHI: The debate aimed at registering the lawmakers’ proposals and discussion on the Budget Execution Report on the first and second quarters of the current fiscal year in the Sindh Assembly continued on Tuesday for the second consecutive day as 10 more members from both sides of the aisle participated in the debate, mainly criticising each other as was done by their colleagues during the previous sitting.
While Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani kept on advising the members to avail themselves of the opportunity of pointing out necessary uplift work in their respective constituencies, the treasury and opposition members criticised each other’s party leaderships with unparliamentarily remarks, which were ultimately expunged by the chair. ....

Sindh assembly empowers child protection agency
Authority can now take suo motu action on cases of violence against children
KARACHI:
The provincial assembly empowered the Sindh Child Protection Authority to take suo motu action on cases of abduction, rape, murder or any other kind of assault against children.
The house passed a law to this effect in Friday s session in the wake of increasing crimes against children.
The Sindh Child Protection Authority Act was originally passed in 2011, but it did not cover any preventive or curative measures. As a result, amendments and drastic changes were made to make the relevant authority more effective in protecting the children of Sindh. ....

The meeting, presided over by NAB chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal, authorised filing of four references against former secretary land utilisation, Sindh, Ghulam Mustafa Phal and others on allegations of illegally allotting state land in Malir district causing a loss of Rs12 billion to the exchequer. ....
