SUKKUR: The Sukkur Police claimed to have killed a criminal in an encounter, while the parents and others dismissed police’s claim, and declared the police’s encounter was fake, as the deceased was allegedly arrested from the hostel of Sindh University on February 10, 2021 by the law enforcement agencies.
Reports said the Sukkur Police claimed that in the limits of Jhanghro Police Station, a police party was patrolling the area and happened to meet some alleged criminals. After an exchange of fire, an alleged criminal, identified as Irfan Jatoi, was killed while his other accomplices managed to escape from the scene. The police claimed to have recovered a pistol from the possession of the deceased. ....

Sindh University conducts entry tests every year. But in the current year, it didn’t take the test due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It announced a new policy in which the criteria for the selection of students was as follows: a student should have got 60 percent marks in intermediate and 40 percent in matric. Students who had the highest marks were given admission in high-ranking departments. Unfortunately, this policy turned out to be unfair to those students who secured Grades C and D in matric and intermediate.
Previously, students who had Grades C and D managed to get admission in these departments on the basis of their good scores in the entry test. Also, the university reserved a large number of seats under the self-finance scheme. This policy favoured the rich who easily paid for the seat. The university should have conducted the entry test. Now, students who couldn’t get good grades cannot get admission in their desired departme ....

Sindh Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the killing of a student of the Sindh University in an alleged encounter in Sukkur after it triggered outrage on social media with opposition parties in the provincial assembly demanding a judicial probe into the matter.
Police claimed that Mohammad Irfan Jatoi was a notorious dacoit wanted in several crimes and was shot dead in an exchange of fire with police in Sukkur district on Sunday.
However, his friends in the varsity and social media activists rejected the police claims and said that he was a Sindh University student who was allegedly taken away by the law enforcers from the varsity on February 10 and killed in custody nearly a month later. ....
