STAFF FILE PHOTO/DAN LITTLE Published: 12/21/2020 6:36:24 PM If you had told me four years ago that the Massachusetts women’s basketball team would be in the position it’s in now, I don’t think I would have believed you. I covered the women’s team during the 2016-17 season, which happened to be head coach Tory Verdi’s first year with the Flagship. For much of that season due to players leaving the program, which happens when a new coach comes in, limited recruits and injuries the Minutewomen were forced to play with just six scholarship players on the roster. Even in the games UMass was competitive, it simply ran out of steam in the second half of most games once teams began to press, and it finished the season with an 9-21 record, going 3-13 in the Atlantic 10. ....
