Heritage rescue is crucial and glaringly obvious

Fiona Wycks and Anna Crighton05:00, May 29 2021 Supplied Severely damaged by the Kaikōura earthquake, Montrose Station Homestead was designed by architect Cecil Wood at a time when he was considered the leading domestic architect in Canterbury. After Covid-19 restrictions last year saw the Canterbury Heritage Awards diverge from their usual biennial format, the awards return on June 11. Fiona Wycks, of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, and historian Anna Crighton highlight some finalists. Step inside a centuries-old Canterbury garden in full autumn bloom

But the garden isn t overly orchestrated, the Davisons preferring to leave it in an arrangement that feels like wilderness. More than 100 established trees make autumn a splendour of bright foliage, and the golden ash is the showstopper this time of year with its bright yellow leaves. Lombardy poplars escort visitors up the drive to the Wynyard house, which is nestled into its surroundings at Culverden, a small town in Northern Canterbury with open views to the Southern Kaikouras. The ‘’modern’’ farmhouse, designed by architect David Robens in 1975, looks like a beach house, Davison says, because of a big row of windows at the entrance.

Church back in Church Corner: 10-year effort to repair quake-damaged building

JOHN KIRK-ANDERSON/Stuff A small event was held on Sunday to officially reopen St Peter’s Anglican Church at Church Corner in Christchurch. Architect Hugh Tennent helped refurbish the damaged church, and it had now been strengthened to 100 per cent of the building code and expanded to include a hospitality space and toilets. “We ve been working for 10 years to achieve this goal and [it] is really exciting for us to be able to celebrate and to open the church,” Mountfort said. “The new church is a really good combination of old and new. It has modern amenities like a kitchen and a hospitality area, but it has kept the majesty of the old building.”
