Catholic services are finishing in Lyttelton, ending a 150-year tradition dating back to the early whalers and Irish immigrants who came to New Zealand.
Dwindling numbers, a priest shortage, and a plan to merge parishes have led to the “end of an era” when the last Catholic service is held in Lyttelton. LEE KENNY reports. It will be with a sense of sadness that Father Peter Costello delivers his sermon on Sunday. It will be the last Catholic mass held in Lyttelton, ending a tradition in the Canterbury port town dating back more than 150 years. About 200 parishioners, past and present, will attend a special gathering at the site of St Joseph the Worker Church, which was destroyed by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

A small event was held on Sunday to officially reopen St Peter’s Anglican Church at Church Corner in Christchurch. Architect Hugh Tennent helped refurbish the damaged church, and it had now been strengthened to 100 per cent of the building code and expanded to include a hospitality space and toilets. “We ve been working for 10 years to achieve this goal and [it] is really exciting for us to be able to celebrate and to open the church,” Mountfort said. “The new church is a really good combination of old and new. It has modern amenities like a kitchen and a hospitality area, but it has kept the majesty of the old building.”

All cities are to some extent intentional but Christchurch, far more than most cities, didn t just happen. It was conceived in England, in the middle of the 19th century, as an Anglican settlement centred on a cathedral, bordered by a park and laid out as a rectangular grid of streets awaiting the buildings that would inevitably occur as prosperity caught up with colonial ambition.
