Future, former Gamecocks shine on final day of SC Pro Am

ABC Columbia Jul 25, 2021 8:16 PM EDT COLUMBIA, S.C. Before Frank Martin’s newest Gamecocks introduce themselves to the South Carolina fans at Colonial Life Arena, they had the chance to play in front of the Midlands at the ninth annual SC Pro Am at Heathwood Hall. The event, run by former Gamecock Carey Rich, featured six teams filled with Gamecocks and other local collegiate and professional basketball players from the midstate area. They played three separate sessions of three games each over the past week, culminating in Sunday’s final exhibitions before these players return to their respective schools. With plenty of new faces putting on the garnet and black this winter, the Pro Am provided a great opportunity to see what kind of talent Frank Martin will be working with in the 2021-22 season.

South Carolina s Martin receives 2-year extension, no raise

Martin did not receive a raise - he’s set to make $3.2 million next season - and the university will not owe him a buyout if he’s dismissed in the final two years of the deal. Martin also won’t owe the school if he leaves for another job during the last two seasons of the contract. Martin will make $3.3 million in the final three years of the contract. Athletic director Ray Tanner said he did a very thorough review of Martin‘s leadership of the program, met with school President Robert Caslen and “recommended a two-year extension for Coach Martin, which was approved.”

Racers bounce back, but lose Robinson to injury

Racers bounce back, but lose Robinson to injury Posted By: Simon Elfrink February 24, 2021 Gage Johnson gjohnson17@murraystate.edu Murray State may have come away with a dominant 20-plus victory over SIUE in its final home game of the season, but they also suffered what could be a tremendous loss. The Racers were up a commanding 46-21 over the Cougars, getting ready to head into the locker room with 44 seconds left in the first half, but before they could prepare for the second half of play, an attempt at a rebound changed the atmosphere of the game instantly. With 28 seconds left in the first half, sophomore forward Demond Robinson went up for a rebound and the back of his left leg made contact with another player. The result was what looked like a gruesome injury that could be a serious setback for Robinson and the Racers heading into the last week of the regular season.

Racers four-game winning streak snapped by Panthers fiery offense

Posted By: Simon Elfrink February 24, 2021 Gage Johnson gjohnson17@murraystate.edu Eastern Illinois had Murray State’s number once again, this time beating them with physical play and sharpshooting en route to a 68-59 home loss for the Racers. The basket seemed like there was a lid on it early for the Racers, as their recent hot shooting didn’t carry over into the first half against the Panthers. EIU took an early 13-8 lead over Murray State thanks to seven points from senior guard Deang Deang.  The Racers’ deficit grew to 18-12 minutes later, as Murray State had gotten off to a 5-16 from the field and 2-9 from beyond the arc.
