Mount Shasta school board votes to get students back on campus full time

Mount Shasta Elementary and Sisson students are headed back to classrooms full time, five days a week – perhaps as early as March 8 – trustees decided in a 3-2 decision Wednesday evening.
The decision allows families to continue distance learning, but the approximately 50 students who currently attend school from home would have to transfer to another teacher. The trustees also opted to hire an additional teacher if necessary, rather than make changes to Sisson s intervention program, which serves students in grades 4-8 with special needs of all kinds.
On Monday, district schools moved to a hybrid model which brings students on campus part time, two or three days a week. But many parents in the community have been pressuring trustees and administrators to open schools more fully, asserting that hybrid learning is not adequate. ....

Women will film trip from Lake Siskiyou to Sacramento River to ocean

Two Mount Shasta women are part of a three-woman team who will make a documentary film and podcast while they raft and kayak down the Sacramento River, exiting through San Francisco Bay to the ocean.
Their plan is to take the source-to-sea packrafting and kayaking trip in spring, stopping on along the way to film people who make their living from the river, and those who want to conserve it.
The 400-mile-long Sacramento River is one of the most important rivers in the West, said outdoor educator Arianna Kosel, 28, of Mount Shasta.
“So many people rely on that river for so many things.” said river guide Alyssa Winkelman, 28, of Mount Shasta, who also works for a trail-building company. ....

Manteca Unified resumes hybrid model amid soaring COVID-19 numbers

MANTECA – The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged students, parents, teachers and administrators in unimaginable ways.
For 10 months, school districts around the country have navigated uncharted waters, balancing what they believe is best for students while trying to ensure their health and safety amid a global pandemic that continues to rage.
Manteca Unified, the third largest public school district in San Joaquin County behind Stockton (41,679) and Lodi (31,400) with 24,000 students and about 3,000 staff members, according to the California Department of Education, started blended/hybrid learning on Nov. 2 when the county moved from the most restrictive purple tier to the red tier in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. In the red tier, the district did not need a waiver from San Joaquin County Public Health Services. ....

Health Center donates portable sanitization stations to local schools

Kids will have a place to quickly ensure their hands are clean at Grenada Elementary School after Shasta Cascade Health Centers donated a sanitation station.
They are also supplying stations to Mt. Shasta Elementary and McCloud Elementary schools.
Shasta Cascade is a non-profit health provider that has served the local community since 2000. They have three clinics in McCloud, Dunsmuir, and Mount Shasta, as well as a dental center in McCloud.
“This donation will help so much, especially in this time of COVID-19,” said fourth grade teacher Sabrina Ellin, who helped with the project. “We have many systems and procedures in place for washing and sanitizing hands to keep our campus as clean and safe as possible. The neat thing about this sanitation station is that it is very light and portable.” ....
