On Monday (July 5), the board held a special meeting, during which Kamloops South-Thompson MLA Todd Stone told the board more fires started in the same period in British Columbia during the historic 2017 fire year. However, he noted significance of the size of fires this year, loss of life and Village of Lytton being wiped out. The board considered asking for a provincial state of emergency. TNRD board chair Ken Gillis said such a declaration makes a statement one he thinks the province should have made “long ago.” He also said he is not confident the province could move swiftly, should it need powers allowed through a state of emergency declaration. ....
An application for a liquor primary licence at 3802 Ranchland Rd., east of Merritt, was brought before the TNRD Board of Directors on May 13, 2021. The licence, if granted, would enable workers staying at this location in a Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP) camp to access alcoholic beverages without traveling into Merritt. Several factors were addressed in considering the application, including the potential for additional noise, concerns from external protective services agencies, and impact on the community. The consequences of the licence on these factors were considered to be negligible. Following two consecutive newspaper advertisements in the Merritt Herald and a 300-metre radius mail-out to owners and occupiers in the area, a Public Hearing was held on May 13 before the meeting commenced. ....
Photograph By KTW (file) ACKNOWLEDGING FIRST NATIONS LAND The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has approved a territorial land acknowledgement, which will be recited at future board and committee meetings. Tthe board approved wording of the acknowledgement, following consultation, which states: “The TNRD would like to acknowledge it connects with many First Nation Communities across our vast regional district and today are located on the Tk’emlups te Secwépemc territory, situated within the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation. The TNRD appreciates the partnership that we have with Tk’emlups te Secwépemc and respect the territory and land on which we gather here today.” TNRD director Arjun Singh, a Kamloops councillor, called it an “important step.” ....
