With effective tax increase, commissioners approve $458M budget including staff, commissioner, and teacher raises

NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– A typically run-of-the-mill process was inflamed this week when New Hanover County Commissioners effectively passed a tax increase, with two commissioners splintering off from the anticipated state of affairs in favor of finding alternative revenue sources.
The now-approved $458 million budget is up $58.4 million from the current fiscal year, or about 15%.
To finance a variety of initiatives, including making New Hanover County Schools employees the highest-paid teachers in the state, the county opted to raise property taxes. The tax rate isn’t actually increasing (in fact, it’s going down by $0.08), but because of recent property revaluations, most property owners will end up paying more. County could nearly double local supplement for teachers, making NHCS highest-paid in the state

NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– Through the passing of the upcoming county budget, teachers in New Hanover County Schools would become the highest paid in North Carolina.
The $22.6 million allocated toward local salary supplements would nearly double the current average supplement to $9,000 and raise the district’s ranking in teacher pay from the 27th to the top slot in the state, according to statewide data from the 2020-21 school year. Currently, Wake County Schools offers the highest supplements at an average of $8,873, followed closely behind by Charlotte-Mecklenburg. ....

New Hanover parents call new equity training 'Marxist indoctrination'

New Hanover County parents are pushing back against the school district and the state for new equity initiatives, calling them part of an agenda to bring critical race theory into schools.
Critical race theory was developed in the 1970s as a way of looking at the context of the law when analyzing racial justice. It establishes that white supremacy and systemic racism is a part of everyday life and and states that while that racism is something people of color experience on a daily basis, it s unlikely to be eradicated because it benefits the white elite.
School districts nationally have seen a conservative pushback against equity teachings with critical race theory at the core of the opposition. In Texas, legislators went as far as to advance a bill that would ban critical race theory in schools. ....

Wilmington teachers frustrated as schools open up in-person learning

Amanda White said she expects teachers will resign after this school year.
After a whole school year of adjusting to a regularly shifting learning environment because of the coronavirus pandemic, she said teachers are tired and frustrated.
“It’s been a lot,” said White, president of the New Hanover County Association of Educators.
And as schools finish up their second week of offering all three learning options – entirely in person, hybrid or entirely remote – White said their passion for their students is the only way teachers will get through the remainder of the school year.
Last month, the New Hanover County Board of Education voted to allow middle and high school students to choose what learning plan they wanted. While the board said that would allow flexibility for students, especially those who have part-time jobs, for teachers it’s meant trying to create lessons that engage students in multiple different learning options and work ....
