Wilmington teachers frustrated as schools open up in-person learning


Amanda White said she expects teachers will resign after this school year. 
After a whole school year of adjusting to a regularly shifting learning environment because of the coronavirus pandemic, she said teachers are tired and frustrated. 
“It’s been a lot,” said White, president of the New Hanover County Association of Educators.  
And as schools finish up their second week of offering all three learning options – entirely in person, hybrid or entirely remote – White said their passion for their students is the only way teachers will get through the remainder of the school year. 
Last month, the New Hanover County Board of Education voted to allow middle and high school students to choose what learning plan they wanted. While the board said that would allow flexibility for students, especially those who have part-time jobs, for teachers it’s meant trying to create lessons that engage students in multiple different learning options and work ....

New Hanover Title IX survey to look at sexual harassment in schools


A district-wide survey that will look at how middle and high school students in New Hanover feel about sexual harassment and discrimination will go before the Board of Education for approval soon.
The survey, created by the district s Title IX committee, will ask students questions about sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination, bystander intervention and other similar topics in the school district. Administrators say they hope the survey will give them a better understanding of the climate and conversation around these issues from the district s student body as a whole.
“I think we ve realized that we need to do a better job of actually listening and engaging our students,” said Jarelle Lewis, New Hanover County Schools Title IX coordinator. “We re looking at ways to approach our students to hear what they re experiencing, what their thoughts are.”  ....
