In an offseason of potentially historic quarterback movement, can the San Francisco 49ers afford to stick it out one more year with Jimmy Garoppolo?
Based on his past, cost and long-term outlook, the answer is a simple no.
Garoppolo boasts the NFL s fifth-largest quarterback contract at five years and $137.5 million, and his $27.5 million average annual value is just outside the top 10. That wouldn t be so bad if the 29-year-old were reliable.
Of course, Jimmy G has been anything but since the New England Patriots took him in the second round of the 2014 draft. In 2016, he suffered a separated shoulder in Week 2 while filling in for a suspended Tom Brady. In 2018, he tore his ACL in the third game, and in 2019 he sprained an ankle in Week 2 before suffering another one in Week 8.

The 2020 season is one best forgotten by quarterback Cam Newton and the New England Patriots. The Patriots posted a losing record for the first time since 2000 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2008. Newton threw just eight touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in 15 games.
Given those struggles (and Tom Brady leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a victory in Super Bowl LV) there s been no shortage of talk regarding big changes under center in Beantown, whether it s via a trade, signing a veteran free agent or selecting a signal-caller early in the 2021 draft.
But while the team s fanbase might not want to hear this after New England s first losing season in two decades, the reality is the problems that plague the Pats go well beyond the quarterback position.

It s hard to make the argument that one player should have been selected without also saying another player should be left off. Looking at this year s starters and reserves the latter group was announced Tuesday on TNT you re hard-pressed to find anyone on the list who shouldn t be there.
With that said, there are a few players in each conference who legitimately deserved it.
Some of them may sneak in as injury replacements. Anthony Davis isn t expected to be healthy in time for the March 7 showcase, so there will be at least one spot open. Some are up-and-coming young stars who should become All-Star fixtures in due time, but a few are on the back end of their careers and may not have many more opportunities.
