Using a high draft pick on a player who can t solidify a starting role or who doesn t reach the end of their rookie contract is a disaster for an NFL team. Not only is it a waste of a valuable draft pick, but in many cases, it also means the team squandered time that could have been spent developing someone else.
Take the Washington Football Team and its selection of Dwayne Haskins Jr. with the 15th pick in 2019. Washington spent parts of two seasons trying to establish Haskins as the starter before cutting ties with him in December. Washington has nothing to show for its pick, and it s back to square one at quarterback.

The 2020-21 NFL postseason is about to get underway. For the 14 teams in the playoffs, the chase for the Super Bowl continues. For the league s other 18 franchises, however, the offseason has already begun. Some of those teams are busy building new front offices. Others are focused on free agency and the draft.
This year s edition of free agency is likely to be a star-studded affair. Several notable names are scheduled to hit the open market, and quite a few quarterbacks will be on the list.
Last offseason saw several signal-callers switching teams. Tom Brady left the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cam Newton joined New England, and Philip Rivers signed with the Indianapolis Colts. We could see even more starters on the move this offseason.
Adam Schefter and Field Yates of ESPN first reported the news.
Fisch has spent this season as the quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots and has nearly 20 years of experience as a coach at both the college and NFL levels.
He will replace Kevin Sumlin, who was fired earlier this month after going 0-5 in 2020. Arizona suffered a 70-7 loss in the final game of the season, marking the 12th straight loss for the team dating back to last season.
The Wildcats had three losing seasons and a 9-20 overall record under Sumlin. When we hired Kevin three years ago, we had very high hopes for our football program, Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke said in a statement (h/t Adam Rittenberg of ESPN). Unfortunately, we simply have not seen the results and upward trajectory in our program that we needed to, and I believe now is the time for a change in leadership.
