Code critical: paramedics union in Nova Scotia sounds alarm on lack of staff and ambulances

SYDNEY, N.S. Ambulances were a plenty outside of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney on Wednesday, but that hasn t always been the case across the province, according to the head of Nova Scotia s paramedics union. We re actually passed a health care crisis. We keep hearing we re in a health care crisis, but we re actually on the brink of disaster in our opinion and our member s opinion, says Michael Nickerson, the Nova Scotia Paramedics Union CEO. Nickerson and the paramedics union are once again sounding the alarm on staffing shortages in the province, and have revived their code critical campaign, which means two or fewer ambulances available in a given county.

Firefighters trained 3 days after N S woman died in nearby home

Posted: Feb 18, 2021 8:57 PM AT | Last Updated: February 19 Phil Stewart, the senior manager of provincial operations at EHS, speaks during a virtual media briefing on Thursday. (CBC) A Nova Scotia fire department was given the proper protective equipment to safely respond to medical calls during the pandemic mere days after a woman died in her home near the station, Emergency Health Services said Thursday. April George died after collapsing Feb. 8 at her home in Bass River. It took 80 minutes for an ambulance to arrive after her husband, Kevin, called 911. No one from the fire hall was alerted to the emergency. At the start of COVID-19 lockdowns last spring, Emergency Health Services  a branch of the provincial government that provides emergency medical services   told its medical first-responder teams across Nova Scotia to no longer attend most medical calls for safety reasons. That included firefighters.

Dispatching firefighters on medical emergencies could have saved loved ones, family members say

RIVER JOHN, N.S. Families of patients who died before paramedics arrived are sounding the alarm about ambulance wait times in Nova Scotia and the paramedics union is doing the same. When Teddy Joudrey had a heart attack, he called his daughter, Grace Clough, who dialled 911. I was on the phone with my father for 15-20 minutes before he passed away or he went silent, Clough said. Joudrey died and never went to the hospital. Clough says it took 45 minutes for paramedics to arrive. It’s enraging that a fire department is two minutes away that has men that could possibly go to your home and and they’re not allowed to do that, Clough said.
