A MAN accused of murdering a 72-year-old grandmother whose body was found in a burning car has been denied bail by the High Court on Thursday afternoon.
Michael Leonard (63) of Hillcrest, Glenosheen, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, who appeared at the bail hearing by video-link, is accused of murdering pensioner Mary O Keeffe (72) at Doneraile, Co Cork, on February 4 of this year.
Detective Sergeant James O Shea of Fermoy Garda Station told State counsel, Mr Emmet Nolan BL, that he was objecting to bail on the basis of the strength of the evidence, the seriousness of the charge and on the grounds that the accused might interfere with witnesses in the case. ....

A man accused of murdering a 72-year-old woman whose body was found in a burning car was denied bail by the High Court on Thursday.
Michael Leonard (63) of Hillcrest, Glenosheen, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, who appeared at the bail hearing by video-link, is accused of murdering pensioner Mary O’Keeffe (72) at Doneraile, Co Cork, on February 4th of this year.

Man charged with killing gran found in burning car is remanded in custody

He will appear via video link before Cork District Court on that date.
The court has already ordered that the forestry worker receive all appropriate medical and psychiatric support required while in custody.
Free legal aid has already been confirmed.
Leonard was arrested on February 5 and taken for questioning to Fermoy Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
He was detained on his discharge from Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he had been treated for hypothermia since Thursday.
Mrs O Keeffe s body was discovered in a gutted Dacia Duster car at the remote Dromdeer woodland shortly before 4pm on February 4. ....

A 53-year-old businessman from Co Cork has been jailed for five years after he pleaded guilty to charges including threatening to kill and assault causing harm to his ex-wife.
Michael Quirke, of Manor Hills, Rathcormac, was ordered to have no contact on his release from prison with his former wife, Mary, from whom he divorced in 2013, or with their three adult children.
Cork Circuit Criminal Court was told that although the couple were divorced and he had signed his interests in his fuel business over to her, they continued to live in the same house and he continued to work in the business for a number of years afterwards. ....
