BROCKTON As a student at Brockton High School, Richard Johnson was torn between two worlds, the mesmerizing street life and the academic path of a goal-oriented student-athlete playing football and running track. Fortunately, Johnson, 34, took the latter route, graduating from Brockton High in 2005 and continuing his education at Merrimack College with a scholarship. Graduating college with degrees in sociology and criminology, I knew I wanted to help people overcome obstacles that I faced and overcame with grit and perseverance, said Johnson, founder of a mentoring program called Sporvo, that aims to help students take the competitive drive they experience as athletes and apply that to academics. ....

LORDSTOWN Usually at this time of the year, local law enforcement officers are spending time with local children shopping for Christmas gifts at area stores as part of Shop with a Cop, but this year adaptions had to be made. For 20 years, the Lordstown police department has shared a Christmas meal with kids in need, prepared by members of the Lordstown Fabric Patchers. The meal traditionally was followed by rides in police cruisers to stores in Niles to shop. ....
