Hogan Announces Appointees To New Juvenile Services Education Board

Governor Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. has named five members to serve on a newly created board that will oversee educational programs within the Department of Juvenile Services.

During the 2021 session, the Maryland General Assembly passed and Hogan signed into law Senate Bill 497, which transfers the responsibility of educational programming from the Maryland State Department of Education to the Juvenile Services Education Board.
Supporters of the legislation noted that the Department of Education is not directly responsible for operating any other school system in the state, and that a dedicated school board would be better able to address unique educational, psycho-social and other special needs of children at Maryland s Juvenile Services facilities. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: Political Notes: Gay veteran Rocha seeks San Diego area congressional seat


A gay Latino veteran who fought the military s homophobic Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy and has ties to San Francisco is seeking to be elected to a Southern California congressional seat. Should he win, Joseph C. Rocha would be the second out Democratic person of color elected to Congress from the state.
Rocha, 35, who lives in Escondido with his dog Daytwa, officially launched his campaign July 7 for the Golden State s 50th Congressional District. He is aiming to oust the Republican incumbent, Congressman Darrell Issa, from his suburban seat northeast of San Diego.
Their 2022 contest is expected to be one of the most closely watched in the state next year. Also running are Democrat William Stephen Houlahan and former Escondido mayor Sam Abed, a Republican, with the top two vote-getters regardless of party in the June primary advancing to the November general election. ....
