The Living Legacy of the HBCU

“Faith is taking the first step even when we can’t see the staircase,” says the Rev. Bernard Keels, dean of University Memorial Chapel at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. “The staircase is quite evident now,” he says with pride. “People are climbing.”
I have asked Keels to tell me the story of Morgan State. Like many of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Morgan State has deep roots in the Christian faith. Within a year of Abraham Lincoln’s signing the Emancipation Proclamation, black leaders in Maryland’s Methodist Episcopal Church had already set their sights on both spiritually uplifting and educating their communities. “Pastors began to meet to discuss how the church could be the catalyst for establishing a university,” Keels explains. ....

As the year comes to a close, reflecting back on the last 12 months is natural. For many people, 2020 was a particularly challenging year. As we at ILA look to a brighter future in 2021, we want to recognize and honor the literacy champions to whom we said goodbye this year. These teachers, researchers, and literacy leaders dedicated their lives to the advancement of the field of literacy, and we are grateful for their service and commitment to transforming lives through literacy.

13,000 people of faith, 45 organizations reject attacks on Rev. Warnock and the Black Church
Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and her allies have attacked Black liberation theology and Rev. Raphael Warnock’s faith throughout the Georgia Senate runoff. In response, 13,292 people of faith and 45 faith-based organizations have released a letter calling these attacks an immoral, dangerous attempt to hijack religion for political gain.
The letter states in part, “As people and organizations of faith, we applaud the Rev. Raphael Warnock for preaching our shared values of nonviolence, righteousness and justice in the prophetic tradition of the Black church, following in the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his predecessor at Ebenezer Baptist Church… ....

My dear and much beloved preacher/teacher/friend Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor was a great historically Black college president, Peace Corps leader in Africa, and pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York. He was also a very dear friend and spiritual mentor.
He preached a great sermon at the Childrenâs Defense Fund (CDF) Haley Farmâs opening as a center for servant leadership development and advocacy for children and others left behind, which I share portions of every holy season.
âWe do not all start at the same scratch line,â he reminded us, âalthough thereâs one original position hypothetically for everybody.â ....
