USD breaks ground on new School of Health Sciences, set to open in 2023
The future of South Dakota’s health sciences expanded Thursday as the University of South Dakota broke ground for construction of the new School of Health Sciences.
Delta Dental of South Dakota Foundation also announced a $1 million donation to the new School to support USD’s dental hygiene program. In honor of the gift, USD’s community dental hygiene clinic will bear the name “Delta Dental Oral Health Center.”
“This is truly a momentous day for the future of the University of South Dakota but also for the health and well-being for all the citizens in this state,” USD president Sheila Gestring said. “The past few months have demonstrated for us the importance of a world-class health care infrastructure.”
USD volleyball extended it’s win streak to four over the weekend, defeating South Dakota State 3-1 on Sunday and 3-0 Monday.
The Coyotes were without Elizabeth Juhnke Sunday, and dropped the opening set 25-21 before winning the final three sets and the match. The last time the Coyotes dropped a set to SDSU was Nov. 2015. The Coyotes had won eight straight matches via 3-0 sweep, and nine straight overall, before Sunday.
Sami Slaughter led the Coyotes with 20 kills on 45 attacks. Mattie Johnson made an appearance in the rotation, collecting her first career kill and tallying 12 in the match.
The Coyotes’ winning streak versus SDSU extended to 11 games Monday. Juhnke returned to the lineup and picked up 12 kills. Slaughter added 10 for USD.

VERMILLION – South Dakota women’s basketball celebrated Senior Day with a 81-61 win over North Dakota State Sunday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Hannah Sjerven scored 24 points with 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists. Sully Buttes alum Chloe Lamb scored nine her her final home game and tied the Coyote program record by playing in her 123rd consecutive game.
USD ended the regular season at 12-2 in the Summit League and is the second seed for the Summit League Women’s Basketball Championship. The Coyotes will play Oral Roberts Saturday at 2:45 PM at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
