Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his staff withheld information from the City Council and misrepresented facts about multiple properties acquired by the city in public reports or presentations, an independent audit released Thursday concludes.
The study issued by the City Auditor’s Office also found that the Faulconer administration failed to conduct proper due diligence before entering real estate deals worth more than $230 million.
“The prior city administration diminished City Council’s oversight capabilities on major real estate acquisitions by failing to provide complete and accurate information,” the audit found.
The report included many recommendations to prevent future real estate acquisitions from being mishandled. Senior aides to Mayor Todd Gloria accepted many of those suggestions but rejected some proposals aimed at improving oversight.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Todd Gloria announced a package of initiatives Monday aimed at producing more homes across the city that residents of all income levels can afford. A roof over your head at a price you can afford is the goal of this housing package, Gloria said. Whether you re a senior who has lived in San Diego for decades or you re a student getting an education from one of our world-class universities, I want to make sure that there is a future for you here.
At a news conference Monday morning, Gloria and other city officials outlined the proposed initiatives being developed by the city s Planning Department to expedite the creation of housing options throughout the city for everyone, regardless of age, income or neighborhood. The housing package is dubbed Homes For All of Us. The initiatives we re unveiling today will help us build more affordable homes faster, and create neighborhoods where San Diegans have choices to get around the city in more sustainable ways, said Mike Hansen, city planning director. Our city staff are focused on finding creative options that will increase access to housing that families, students, seniors and current and future San Diegans can afford.
The median price of an existing, single-family detached home in San Diego County rose to $825,120 in April, an increase from $800,000 a month ago, mirroring a spike across California that brought the state's median price above the $800,000 benchmark for the first time, a real estate group said.
