A motive in the shooting has yet to be released, but Mellish, a Jamaican-born former standout high school athlete in New York City, claims he s innocent. Mellish s former attorney insisted his client was not guilty, but his arguments fell short with the judge and Mellish was ordered to remain in jail.

The teen, who is also facing a murder charge, among others, gave a statement to police that Mellish s attorney said was less than credible.
