HCDO Announces Endorsements in 2021 Democratic Primary Races

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ - Despite legal challenges and protests from progressives, the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) announced its endorsements for the June 2021 primary. Gov. Phil Murphy, with a recent poll statewide showing his approval rating at more than 58 percent of likely voters, will top the ticket with his running mate, Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.
“Hudson County is home to some of the most diverse communities in the nation and as an organization, we are committed to promoting leadership that is reflective of the people they are elected to serve,” said HCDO Chairwoman Amy DeGise. “From Governor Murphy, who has been a tireless advocate of Hudson County’s working- and middle-class families, to our State Senate, Assembly and county candidates, I’m confident this slate will stand by our Democratic values, continue to fight for our County and do what is best for all of our residents.” ....

NJ bill curbing mandatory prison sentences expected to get vote

Advocates for criminal justice reform are cheering a new bill up for approval in the state Assembly that would eliminate mandatory minimum prison sentences for a bevy of crimes, from public corruption to drug possession to shoplifting.
The bill, S-3456, which received swift approval from the state Senate on Monday with no discussion and advanced at an Assembly committee meeting Wednesday, remains controversial, with one Republican lawmaker chiding his colleagues for writing themselves a “get-out-of-jail-free card.”
The effort in New Jersey to ax mandatory minimum prison sentences is part of a nationwide push to revisit anti-crime legislation from the 1980s and ‘90s that reformers blame for creating a dramatic racial disparity among inmates.
