NJ will allow for reduced prison sentences for non-violent drug crimes


A bill that would have eliminated mandatory minimum prison sentences for a host of crimes has been conditionally vetoed by Gov. Phil Murphy, who told lawmakers Monday that he remains troubled the legislation was amended to include a group of public corruption charges.
The news of Murphy’s veto was paired with a directive issued by Attorney General Gurbir Grewal that will require prosecutors to agree to shorter prison sentences for people facing non-violent drug charges, and for people already jailed for those crimes.
Grewal said the order advances the Murphy administration s goal of eliminating some mandatory minimum sentences until the governor and lawmakers can agree on legislation. ....
