Sandra Edwards lives on a dead-end street in Fifth Ward, which sits on top of a plume of contamination from a former industrial facility where wooden railroad ties were treated with creosote a chemical mixture that has been found in the soil and groundwater of at least 100 homes in the area. ....

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens cancer cluster report released

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) For more than a year, ABC13 has been following the plight of people in Houston s Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood.
A 2019 state report showed the city s first cancer cluster that many believe is due to creosote contamination from a nearby railyard.
This week, the state came back with another report, saying they found higher than normal leukemia rates in children.
One of the area s residents, Diane Cormier, is all too familiar with obituaries and death.

Nearly 13 months after a cancer cluster was detected in northeast Houston, a new cancer cluster has emerged in Houston s historically black Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods.
According to a new report released by the Texas Department of Health Services, children in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens area contracted leukemia at a five times greater rate than the state average. The cluster was detected near a legacy site of creosote contamination. ....
