the center for presidential history promotes the study of the u.s. presidency, and it does so through its teaching and research. through public outreach events such as this one. and also through its collective memory projects which is an oral history run by staff on the center who film and record our archives of people who have been in the administration, various administration s as well as local officials who work closely with those administrations. the center also runs a very robust postdoctoral fellowship program. it s been in effect for about five years and it has rapidly become probably the most influential and famous fellowship program in this area of its kind. each of the fellows who completes the term as fellow has published a book or contracted a book at a major university press. such as harvard, princeton or cornell and they all get jobs and that s a good thing. we are very proud of them. we are pleased to have rich trum a briefme give introduction if i could and then we will have a conversation with he is a native of southwest pennsylvania and he is was a football star in high school. had he not done injured, he might have laid it penn state. he did go to penn state undergraduate and graduate in 1971, then went to villanova law school and graduated in 19. washington too work as a logger for united mine workers, then move back to pennsylvania to become a coal miner. he did that for a while, and then was elected to the executive order of the united mine workers, district four. in 1982, he became the resident of united mine were as, a position he held until 1995, when he became the secretary-treasurer of the afl-cio. in 2009, he was elected president of the afl-cio. thank you very much for coming. in the last midterm elections, the democrats won control of the house, and all of a sudden many of the things that you and other members of the afl-cio wanted would be
