HOUSE OKS ANTI-DWI TECHNOLOGY: Back in April, I did a column on U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján’s support for anti-DWI technology in vehicles that stops a drunken driver before they hurt someone.
The New Mexico Democrat said his RIDE Act, like the HALT Act in the House sponsored by Reps. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., David McKinley, R-W.Va., and Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., “would involve a variety of drunk driving prevention systems, including driver monitoring, which can detect signs of distracted, impaired or fatigued driving, and alcohol detection, which uses sensors to determine that a driver is under the influence of alcohol, and then prevent the vehicle from moving,” according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. ....

Although the entire prep sports season was condensed into one lightning round of five months, it shall always remain a year to remember, no asterisks necessary. For all of those athletes and coaches who got it done, a giant tip of the fedora. Well played. You all deserve every accolade and pat on the back you receive. Although the season was markedly different and compressed, there were still those who stood out from the rest and this is Journal North’s annual rundown of the best of the best in each sport.
FALL
Wakei Hettinga, Los Alamos: Hettinga finally burst from the long shadow cast by teammate Rafael Sanchez, surging to the end of the Class 4A championships in 16 minutes, 10.56 seconds to finish fifth overall and help the Hilltoppers earn the runner-up spot on the podium in the NMAA’s first pre-pandemic championship. ....

Yodice: Amazing, and apt, close to spring

And there was much to celebrate.
Albuquerque Academy and St. Pius on Saturday night provided an enthralling finish to this unusual calendar, combining to score nine runs in the final inning. The Chargers scored four in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off, 8-7, in the Class 4A state baseball final.
Athletes dream of moments like the one Devan Johnson of Academy enjoyed, with a three-run double to win the game. He’ll relive that moment internally, and regale people with that story, for many years. What an electrifying exit scene.
And were it not for the Volcano Vista-Hobbs overtime thriller in the girls state basketball tournament in early May and that game’s rather spectacular finish this would have gotten my vote for the best postseason game in any sport this year. ....
