Santa Fe, New Mexico News honors prep 'Athletes of the Year' » Albuquerque Journal

Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal Although the entire prep sports season was condensed into one lightning round of five months, it shall always remain a year to remember, no asterisks necessary. For all of those athletes and coaches who got it done, a giant tip of the fedora. Well played. You all deserve every accolade and pat on the back you receive. Although the season was markedly different and compressed, there were still those who stood out from the rest and this is Journal North’s annual rundown of the best of the best in each sport. FALL Wakei Hettinga, Los Alamos: Hettinga finally burst from the long shadow cast by teammate Rafael Sanchez, surging to the end of the Class 4A championships in 16 minutes, 10.56 seconds to finish fifth overall and help the Hilltoppers earn the runner-up spot on the podium in the NMAA’s first pre-pandemic championship.

Class 4A track and field: Los Alamos sweeps championships

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Los Alamos’ Rafael Sanchez signals as he crosses the finish line in first place in the boys’ Class 4A 3,200-meter run. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal) Scoring 100 points at a state track and field meet is a monster showing for any school. The Los Alamos High School girls went full-blown Godzilla on the rest of Class 4A on Friday. As part of a Hilltopper boys/girls team sweep, it was the girls who had the University of New Mexico track complex buzzing, as they piled up a staggering 183½ points. That was more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Artesia (76.2). Remarkably, Los Alamos’ total was higher than the second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place teams combined.
