UCF researchers use advanced light to reveal how different biofuels behave

 E-Mail
ORLANDO, Jan. 12, 2021 -Vehicles have evolved to become more efficient and sophisticated, but their fuel hasn t necessarily evolved along with them. The Department of Energy is determined to identify cleaner burning and renewable alternatives to gasoline, and through the work of two UCF researchers, the DOE is one step closer to that goal.
Research engineer Anthony C. Terracciano and Associate Professor Subith Vasu have developed a model that will help engine designers, fuel chemists and federal agencies determine whether certain biofuels should be implemented as an alternative fuel for vehicles.
The research was conducted as part of the DOE s Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines initiative, better known as Co-Optima. Findings were recently published in Nature ....

DoD Testing Shows Bio-Agents Degrade Rapidly in Open Air – Global Biodefense

The experiments revealed that in open air, simulants decayed 10 to 1,000 times faster than in laboratory settings. These data indicate that laboratory tests underestimate the rate of agent decay that occurs outdoors, and on their own, laboratory tests are not sufficient in understanding the decay process outdoors.
To learn how biological threat agents decay upon interacting with variables in the open air, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Chemical and Biological Technologies Department (DTRA CB) developed a new, state-of-the-art test apparatus, the Captive Aerosol Growth and Evolution System (CAGES).
“Due to various challenges posed by outdoor testing, it was generally assumed by scientists that biological threat agents aged and decayed at similar rates indoors as they did outdoors. Our goal was to test this theory,” said Richard Mathieson, Science & Technology Manager, DTRA CB. ....

Orbital Composites to demonstrate containerized 3D printing robots for AM wind blade manufacture

Orbital Composites (San Jose, Calif., U.S.) will collaborate with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, Knoxville, Tenn., U.S.) and the University of Maine (UMaine, Orono, Maine, U.S.) to advance on-site, high-throughput manufacturing of wind blades with large-scale continuous fiber additive manufacturing via a $4 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Orbital notes that this project will also enable the demonstration/potential validation use of its containerized 3D printing robots for wind blade manufacture.
In addition to ORNL’s previous collaboration with Sandia National Laboratory, for a 3D-printed wind turbine blade mold, and UMaine’s 120-foot-long 3D printer, Orbital Composites says it has been quietly pioneering its own accomplishments under its Mobile Robotic Additive Manufacturing with Continuous Fiber, a modular platform which uses a twelve-axis robot arm to enable AM of non-planar surfa ....

About the Event
If the question is, “Who was the greatest American leader of the 20th century?” it would be hard to answer with any name other than “Dwight David Eisenhower.” Yes, admirers of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt can make a case for their being the premier political leaders of their eras, but Ike can match the Roosevelt cousins in politics and then raise them one with his military accomplishments as the victorious Supreme Allied Commander in World War II.
Eisenhower’s granddaughter Susan has had a long run as an esteemed political consultant, historian, and think-tank leader. Now in her late sixties, she decided now was the time to write the equivalent of a textbook on leadership, as personified by the career of her historic ancestor, in ....
