Rajshahi University outgoing vice-chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan’s term expired on May 6. Pro-vice-chancellor Professor Ananda Kumar Saha on the same day took charge as acting VC by an order from the Education Ministry.
Everyone is concerned as to who would be the next vice-chancellor of the university. The outgoing VC was criticized for allegations of some corrupt activities, and so teachers and students of the university are expecting that an honest teacher will take charge as the next vice-chancellor.
According to the Rajshahi University Ordinance 11(1) section, the vice-chancellor shall be appointed by the chancellor for a period of four years from a panel of three persons to be nominated by the Senate on such terms and conditions as may be determined by the Chancellor and shall be eligible for reappointment for a further period of four years. ....

Groundwater abuse takes toll on Barind

Experts have observed people in the region are struggling to get drinking water while many paddy farmers are either diversifying to less water-intensive crops or converting their croplands to ponds and brick kilns.
The region is characterised by decreasing rainfall and depleting groundwater levels, mostly extracted for paddy farming, rice mill operations, and other industrial purposes.
The situation is worsening as some people are withdrawing everyone s share of the groundwater, said a prominent hydrologist, Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan of Rajshahi University.
Apart from paddy fields, at least 35 auto rice mills in Jhilim union, which covers 23.45 square kilometres of area, use groundwater round the clock, heavily affecting the aquifer, he said. ....

Barind people get safe water as govt. project implemented | Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

people are getting safe drinking water as a breakthrough of a government
project implemented in the drought-prone Barind area, officials said.
The project styled “Community-based Water Supply in Lower Underground
Water-level Areas in Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts” has
been accomplished before the scheduled time in June next, they said.
The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has implemented the
three-year project with an estimated cost of around Taka 32.19 crore to
ensure safe drinking water for around 1.73 lakh people living in the water-
stressed areas.
of 865 submersible pumps in 59 Unions of 12 Upazilas have been completed.
So, a total of 34,600 households have came under the water supply ....
