GRHS Student and Actress Receives Scholarships to Attend New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts

GREEN RIVER Green River High School (GRHS) Senior Sandra Figenser is off to the Big Apple to attend the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (NYCDA) following her graduation this year.
Figenser said she has been performing longer than she has been speaking, and her goal has always been to make a life out of her passion for performance art.
“I made my brother and sister act and sing in Christmas programs with me before I knew we were performing. Sometimes these performances were torturously long for my extended family,” she said.

Figenser has been in a number of productions throughout her life, and while attending GRHS, and her hard work and talents have paid off. She has been offered two $11,000 scholarships to attend NYCDA, which is a two-year, private-acting college in New York City. ....

Local Thespians Advance To State Competition
Redmond Proficiency Academy (RPA) Thespian Troupe #7715 recently competed in the annual Oregon Thespians South Regional Acting Competition, winning 14 ribbons for excellence in numerous acting categories.
“In a year where it’s hard enough to complete any daily task, let alone compete via an entirely new format and yet they still took home fourteen ribbons,” Theatre Director Kate Torcom said. “It’s a testament to the tenacity and true heart of this theatre department. These students truly put themselves out there and I am pleased to see their dedication recognized.”
An all digital event this year, students were given from Feb. 6-12 to submit their acting competition videos and judges had from Feb. 13-22 to rank them and submit scores. Results were announced on Tuesday, Feb. 23 via the Oregon Thespians Instagram account. ....

New York Stage and Film Commits $100,000 to Support Artists with NEXUS Initiative
New York Stage and Film, considered “one of the preeminent incubators for theater in the country,” has committed $100,000 to their new NEXUS Initiative that brings together 20 multi-hyphenate artists to explore the question “where does story exist at the intersection of stage and film?” Through this inaugural program, NYSAF will offer direct support to these artists – each participant receives $5,000 and will take part in a series of conversations focused on the needs of new and expanded forms of storytelling that resonate with our time.
In order to increase access to the program and respond to the ideas of a broad range of storytellers, these 20 participants were recommended by 14 leading artists of stage and film for their accomplishments in exploring new forms of storytelling. Salina Central Theatre Troupe 639 has been recognized as one of the Kansas Thespians Honored Troupes of 2020. This year, due to COVID-19, the requirements for this distinction were altered and troupes that would normally compete for Gold Honor Troupe were recognized as Honored Troupes.
The troupe’s accomplishments, including their presentation of The Greek Tragedy Antigone, which was selected for a mainstage production at the Tri-State Festival, were highlighted in a digital submission of their activities during this unprecedented year in the theatre education.
Two Troupe 639 students earned a Superior Distinction in solo events called Thespys and have qualified to compete at the International Thespian Festival. ....
