To increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22. The CBD has chosen “Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity” the theme for 2018 International Biological Diversity.
“The theme was chosen to mark the 25
th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to highlight progress made in the achievement of its objectives at the national and global levels,” United Nations said in a release. ....

commitments to actualize its pledge of combating the global loss of biodiversity by
achieving a net zero loss of biodiversity from its operations, with a specific target of
2030.

The UN Conference for Environment and Development, at which the Convention on Biological Diversity – the first global agreement on protection of natural resources and their sustainable development, has been agreed to be signed, was held in Rio de Janeiro on June 5, 1992. The goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity is to preserve biodiversity on all levels, to provide sustainable use of its components, to provide access to genetic resources and their joint use of fair basis. At this time, the Convention has been ratified by 196 countries.
May 22, the day of agreement and adoption of the Convention, was declared by the UN General Assembly by its Resolution for December 20, 200 as International Biological Diversity Day.
