Presented by LCEC, the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s weekly Virtual Speaker Series will continue on March 9 at 4 p.m. with “The Story of Ospreys” with Claudia Burns, volunteer for The International Osprey Foundation.
Ospreys are large brown and white raptors who breed in Southwest Florida from December through April and can be seen diving for live fish in shallow waters throughout the area. Because they build their nests right out in the open, their behavior is easy to observe, but not always easy to understand. The presentation uses photos, videos and recorded vocalizations to explain osprey behavior. ....

Osprey nest monitors needed on Captiva

The International Osprey Foundation is seeking “citizen scientists” on Captiva to locate and monitor osprey nests on.
“Monitoring is easy and fun and can be done by land or sea,” Carol Smith, coordinator of the nest monitoring groups, said.
TIOF has been monitoring osprey nests on Sanibel for over 20 years.
“We want to expand our data to include the osprey on Captiva,” Smith said.
The nesting season begins in January and ends in May. Even though the season is already under way, volunteers are still welcome. Volunteers have designated routes and observe the nests about every two weeks. Nesting data documents the health and breeding of ospreys, as well as how environmental factors such as water quality and fish availability affect their nesting success. ....

The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society and The International Osprey Foundation will host Dr. Alan F. Poole for a Webinar program, “Ospreys 2021 The Revival of a Global Raptor,” on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
An author and associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Poole will bring attendees up to date on the status of one of the best-loved birds of prey using part travelogue, part biography and part scientific detective story. Editor of the Birds of North America life history series for 22 years, he lives along the Westport River estuaries in Massachusetts and has been studying ospreys for over 35 years. Poole has written two books on the species, including the recent “Ospreys: the Revival of a Global Raptor.” ....

TIOF awards grant to Belarus team

The International Osprey Foundation’s 2020 grant for $2,034 was awarded to Denis Keitel and his team for their research to identify and secure official protection status for osprey nesting sites in the bogs and river valleys of the northern Belarus forests in eastern Europe. Timely protection is essential to prevent logging in critical breeding areas, TIOF Grants Chair Carol Smith said.
The program aligns with osprey recovery and conservation plans developed by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife. Key elements of the program include mapping four at-risk areas where osprey populations have been reported, determining population metrics and nest productivity, banding chicks and installing artificial nesting platforms where needed, and securing national protection status involving approval from four government agencies. ....

Sanibel-Captiva Audubon announces virtual lecture series for 2021

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society’s lecture programs offered live for decades at The Community House will be presented as a series of Zoom Webinars this season.
They will take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in January and February.
Dr. Jerry Jackson, local wildlife expert and host of WGCU’s radio show “With the Wild Things,” will kick off the series with a presentation focused on bird behavior. This season’s lineup also includes Audubon lecture favorite Rick Bunting and a special joint presentation with The International Osprey Foundation and Dr. Alan Poole, noted osprey expert and author. ....
