A new regulation that gives Indonesia’s government jurisdiction over online service-providers and platforms has come under fire from internet freedom and human rights advocates, who warn that it will be used to stifle free speech.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology says the policy, which requires online platforms to register with the government for content monitoring, aims to protect domestic users and monitor content that violates the law.
Ministerial Regulation 5 affects services such as Facebook, YouTube and Netflix, and is too sweeping, according to Human Rights Watch.
“MR5 is deeply problematic, granting government authorities overly broad powers to regulate online content, access user data, and penalize companies that fail to comply,” HRW said in a statement last week. ....

The government of India, in a May 7 advisory told social media companies to curb misinformation and fake news, and content that “that may affect public order and [be] unlawful in any way”. The advisory, a copy of which MediaNama has obtained in full via Right To Information request, and is published below, tells social media companies to warn users to not spread misinformation, and to “

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the statutory body which operates the Aadhaar project, earned Rs. 254.07 crores in the last 21 months through charges for Aadhaar authentication services, MoneyLife reported on Monday.
UIDAI revealed that it earned ₹239.09 crores from eKYC authentication and ₹14.98 cores from providing yes/no authentication responses between May 2019 and March 2021. The GST on these services contributed ₹45.73 crores to government coffers, the report further stated. This information was revealed in response to a Right To Information request by a law student, Aniket Gaurav.
According to annual reports published by UIDAI, the agency earned ₹2.91 crores in the 2018-2019 financial year and ₹129.73 crores in the 2019-2020 financial year from providing authentication services. ....

Government tells social media platforms to control misinformation and discourage fake news: Report

The government told social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to control misinformation and content that could “disturb the public order,” the Economic Times reported. The advisory reportedly reminds social media companies that they are classified as intermediaries under the law, and instructs platforms to “initiate awareness campaigns” among users to not circulate “any false news or misinformation”.
The government has not made this advisory public. We have filed a Right To Information request for a copy of the advisory notice.
While the present advisory does not seem to advocate for more censorship of criticism directly, the government has, on at least two instances, tried to scrub social media of critical posts under the garb of misinformation and public order.
