More steps taken toward creation of new airport

More steps taken toward creation of new airport The Oak Ridge City Council took two actions Monday night involving the future construction of a general aviation airport in west Oak Ridge at Heritage Center near the former K-25 site. The measures were steps toward acquiring land for the airport. City Council approved both measures unanimously at its meeting. The first action involved authorizing City Manager Mark Watson to take actions toward the eventual purchase of private land for the airport, such as getting land surveys and contract negotiations, provided that it’s within funding already available from grants. A memo included in the City Council agenda stated this measure is so that the city can acquire two buildings for the airport that are owned by JMM Realty.

City accepts grants for new airport

Oakridger At its special called meeting on Monday, the Oak Ridge City Council unanimously approved five grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the state of Tennessee to help it develop the Oak Ridge General Aviation airport. Some of the grants, as the resolution and the agenda for the meeting indicate, were previously available to the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority, which was in charge of the airport project before the city took it over last year.  The City Council has not allocated any local money to the airport project. The grants include a $3,193,097 for planning and design functions from ARC. That grant requires a $1,463,694 local match, but funds from the Tennessee Department of Transportation will cover it.
