At its special called meeting on Monday, the Oak Ridge City Council unanimously approved five grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the state of Tennessee to help it develop the Oak Ridge General Aviation airport.
Some of the grants, as the resolution and the agenda for the meeting indicate, were previously available to the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority, which was in charge of the airport project before the city took it over last year.
The City Council has not allocated any local money to the airport project.
The grants include a $3,193,097 for planning and design functions from ARC. That grant requires a $1,463,694 local match, but funds from the Tennessee Department of Transportation will cover it.
