It was the worst of times, it was the strangest of times. In 2020, against the backdrop of historic demonstrations and social unrest and a once-in-a-lifetime health crisis, Canandaigua officials had to figure out what to do about a kangaroo yes, you read that right and a wandering bear. That s not all. Rochester put a public servant on a doughnut, was ready to believe that animals had escaped from the Seneca Park Zoo and watched a Zamboni machine go up in flames. Canandaigua Academy students to start remote learning Friday

CANANDAIGUA Canandaigua Academy students will shift to remote learning starting Friday and it will continue through Wednesday, Dec. 23, when students head off for winter break.
The decision a day after Ontario County Public Health officials issued an urgent message to avoid social gatherings as COVID-19 cases continue to soar to record levels this month was made as a result of staffing issues primarily from quarantines, but also some COVID-positive cases specifically and recently at the Academy, according to Superintendent Jamie Farr.
In-person learning at Canandaigua Primary-Elementary School and Canandaigua Middle School will continue. ....

Free COVID-19 testing in Ontario, Seneca, Yates counties begins next week. Find out where and when

The Public Health Departments of Ontario, Seneca, and Yates counties announce free COVID-19 testing for the public beginning next week.
Each county has organized asymptomatic testing opportunities throughout the region. In addition, the counties have partnered with Finger Lakes Community Health (FLCH) to add additional asymptomatic testing opportunities in more locations.
Victor-Farmington Ambulance will add a site in Ontario County.
Testing availability for asymptomatic people has been challenging for these communities, said Mary Beer, public health director of Ontario County, with many who seek testing having to make lengthy trips to Monroe County.
Deb Minor, public health director of Yates County, and county officials said they are so thankful FLCH has expanded its hours to support the effort. ....

Here are the COVID-19 numbers as of 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, as reported by Ontario County Public Health.
There are now 2,371 confirmed cases since the pandemic started, 88 of which were newly reported Friday. On Thursday, 86 new cases were reported.
Here is their age range: 0-17 (15), 18-29 (12), 30-39 (13), 40-49 (12), 50-59 (17), 60-69 (8), 70-79 (7), 80-89 (2) and 90+ (2).
Residents are from Geneva (14), Farmington (7), Bloomfield (1), Canandaigua (35), Shortsville (4), Victor (6), Phelps (1), Naples (3), Farmington (7) Clifton Springs (3), Stanley (2), Manchester (1), Livonia (1), Hemlock (1) and Palmyra (2)
Twenty-eight people are in the hospital, which is one more than yesterday. One person in long-term care has died since numbers were reported yesterday, bringing the total to 44. ....

Jim and Jeanette Zavislan build on historic preservation in East Bloomfield

EAST BLOOMFIELD Back in 2015 Jim and Jeanette Zavislan, then of Pittsford, were looking for a ranch house on about 10 acres.
Instead, the empty nesters fell in love with a storied circa-1840 Greek Revival house, known as the George and Addison Wheeler House, with a large barn on more than 100 acres. Jim, a professor at the University of Rochester, and Jeanette, an independent technical writer and an avid gardener, have since embraced the country life on their Grimble Road property.
“Our three grown children love visiting to enjoy the fresh air,” Jeanette said. ....
