If future generations of law professors want to teach a class in what never to do, the belligerent and self-indulgent performance of Michael van der Veen, one of Donald Trump’s impeachment lawyers, could provide a lot of the video content. Deep into his defense of the former president today, van der Veen broke into a highly personal complaint. More than 140 law professors including President Ronald Reagan’s solicitor general and a co-founder of the conservative Federalist Society had signed a letter condemning the Trump team’s arguments as “frivolous.” This letter badly hurt van der Veen’s feelings. The letter, he said, represented, a “direct threat to my law license, my career, and my family’s financial well-being.” ....

Eric Holder gave millions to Nazis! Or at least that’s how Darrell Issa will put it. But seriously, the Department of Justice has a long-standing policy of allowing Nazi war criminals to collect Social Security payments if they agree to get the hell out of the U.S. [Associated Press via New Europe]
A Cleveland attorney, Peter Pattakos, is not worried about contracting Ebola, even though he was in a room with a current Ebola patient, because Pattakos is neither a crazy person nor a cable news producer and realizes that he never exchanged bodily fluids with the patient. As he points out, “I’m much more likely to be mistakenly killed by a police officer in this country than to be killed by Ebola, even if you were in the same bridal shop.” [Cleveland.com] ....

Deborah L. Rhode, a leading legal ethics scholar and strong advocate for enhanced access to justice, died last week.
Rhode, who was 68, was a longtime professor at Stanford Law School, which is where she founded the Stanford Center on the Legal Profession in 2008.
She also formerly chaired the ABA’s Commission on Women in the Profession and received multiple ABA awards in recognition of her professional responsibility and public service work.

Last Friday, Professor Maybell Romero invited me to a panel discussion at AALS. Because I’m anonymous, it was impossible for me to attend. Unlike SEALS, AALS doesn’t allow anonymous folks to present. But, thanks to Professor Brian Frye and a Nixon mask, I was able to communicate some thoughts.
