Republican voters in North Huntingdon’s Fourth Ward will see two familiar names on the township commissioners ballot in the May 18 primary. It will be a replay of the 2017 primary and general election, only the roles will be reversed because Brian Blasko, then the challenger, now is the incumbent and Richard Gray, then the incumbent, is this year’s challenger. Unless some Democrat gets at least 10 write-in votes in the primary, the winner of the Republican primary is virtually assured of winning the seat in November. Gray came very close to beating Blasko as a write-in candidate in the November 2017 election. ....

The controversy over regulating backyard chickens in North Huntingdon was back before the township commissioners Wednesday when the seven-member board once again split over whether to amend existing rules governing poultry in a neighborhood. The board majority on Wednesday let stand a decision to hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at the North Huntingdon Town House on the issue of giving residents the option of obtaining a conditional use permit if they want to raise chickens on property of less than 10 acres in certain residential neighborhoods. Those wanting the permit would have to present their case before the zoning hearing board. ....

North Huntingdon could lose its $30,000 grant for covid-related expenses because township officials are thumbing their noses at state public health mandates designed to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. County Commissioner Doug Chew said Wednesday during an online forum that the county is bound by contract to distribute federal CARES Act money only to entities that comply with state public health mandates. Township commissioners have spoken out against state limits on public gatherings and ordered its police to ignore businesses violating them. Last week they took an even more strident posture, rejecting the suggestion that they hold virtual meetings to avoid violating Gov. Tom Wolf’s newest mandate limiting indoor gatherings to 10 people. ....
