The Globe and Mail Lou Trottier Published April 14, 2021 Bookmark Most tire retailers in Canada have a noticeable spike in tire sales twice a year. They correspond with the late fall November season (when everyone is prepping for winter tire installation) and then again in April (when all those winter tires are coming off). Accordingly, all tire manufacturers seem to have fallen into a pattern of competing with each other by offering a variety of rebates around these times in an attempt to entice consumers to their brand. However, a couple of questions come to mind. If all manufacturers are offering similar rebates, is there any real winner? When a customer is spending approximately $1000 on a decent set of tires, is a $70 mail in rebate a big deal? And why can’t rebates be claimed at the point of purchase instead of making you, the consumer, wait for that rebate cheque or prepaid credit card in the mail? ....
Researchers found that the heart rates of those who watched the game on television increased as much as they would be the participants to do a moderately difficult workout. ....
Apr 12 2021 Read 15 Times Researchers in the University of Florida’s Department of Chemical Engineering are using Integra’s VOYAGER pipettes to help streamline their workflow and improve pipetting accuracy. Scientists in the Jain lab have developed a CRISPR-based rapid testing kit that can identify biomarkers associated with disease. Long Nguyen, Research Scientist and Lab Manager, explained: “This technology is essentially a nucleic acid biomarker detection system, and has huge scope in the medical field. Last year, we optimised this platform to detect prostate cancer, HIV and HCV, but when COVID-19 hit in March, we immediately realised that the system could be repurposed for COVID-19 testing to give people a result in under an hour.” ....
Hankook Origami, Shape-Shifting Wheel Is Perfect for Exploring Alien Planets This is oversimplifying it, but it is accurate: researchers have developed a new wheel prototype, one that is able to change shape and tread at the push of a button, making it ideal for use on all types of terrain with zero preparation in advance. It is called the “high-load capacity origami transformable wheel,” according to this paper published in Science Robotic (hat top to Interesting Engineering). This origami wheel has been in development for a very long time, and the latest prototype comes with countless improvements over earlier models. So much so that researchers are happy with sharing it with the world, via the paper and the video available at the bottom of the page. Of note is the fact that the wheel can now transform in motion and that it can now carry as much as 2,248 pounds (1,019 kg) of weight on top of the platform. ....
