Over a Harrah’s Philadelphia oval not friendly to closing horses, the Sweet Lou sophomore colt Hellabalou made a startling 2021 debut on Wednesday (April 14), winning an $11,200 co-featured pace in 1:51.1, covering his own last half officially in :53.
Hellabalou was third over as pacesetter Step On The Gas attempted to take his third win in his last four starts. But when driver Andrew McCarthy sent Hellabalou wide early in the backstretch to circle dull cover, he responded with a sizzling :25.4 third quarter and kept going to race first-over into the far turn. Eugene Landy s Sassas Sister was an upset winner in the $20,000 Mares Open Tuesday (April 13) at Harrington Raceway.
The Jim Porter trainee catapulted to the lead in deep stretch, holding off Moments Of Joy and Anytime N for her 4th win of the year. Sassas Sister fanned out wide from third-over position and surged through the stretch to spring the upset. Trae Porter drove the $46.60 winner.
It was the second-straight win on the card at long odds for that same driver-trainer-owner combo, who also won with You Beda Rock ($18.20) in the race prior.
Trainer Clyde Francis, owner George Teague and driver Montrell Teague scored a double with Rowdy Rousey ($10.60) and Dirty Shirley ($16.80). ....

Montreal Teague worked out a beauty of a trip for Goldberg in Thursday’s $20,000 Open Handicap for pacers at Dover Downs, and the Clyde Francis trainee rewarded his crew with an upset score to the tune of 16-1.
Goldberg landed in the two-hole behind Bo Mach who carved out fractions of :27, :56.1 and 1:23. JJ Flynn put first-over pressure on the leader on the way to the three-quarter pole before fading. Race favourite Solid Gold N kicked off cover late, but it was Goldberg who got clearance in the lane and used a :26.4 final frame to win by a head over pacesetting Bo Mach in 1:50.1. Apple Valley Art took a new lifetime mark of 1:52.4 and claimed top honours in the second preliminary round of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Thursday at Dover Downs.
The winner of the Harrington DSBF series earlier in the season, Apple Valley Art ($4.20) scored decisively in the second of two $20,000 divisions. Tim Tetrick brushed Apple Valley Art to the lead with a lap to go, and the pair repelled a first-over challenge from eventual third-place finisher Leonards Legacy before evading a three-wide push from runner-up Elite Retreat by 1-1/2 lengths.
