CONCERNED about the amount of litter on Bridgwater streets, two councillers set about finding out where the litter was orginating from. District Councillor for the Bridgwater Westover Ward and Leader of Bridgwater Town Council, Brian Smedley, said: One of the major problems of our consumer society is the amount of waste we produce. When it comes to take-away food, there is the dual problem of excessive packaging and litter. The number of people who eat their burgers, drink their coffee and then throw the containers and wrappers on the streets, or in our parks is astonishing. But what is also astonishing is the amount of packaging used. It takes most people about five minutes to eat a take-away burger, so why wrap it in serviettes then a bag, then a box and then another bag? ....
‘I gave up being a vegetarian and started eating meat again – to save the planet’ When food writer Clare Finney looked into the environmental impact of the meat industry, the findings challenged all of her preconceptions Clare Finney had turned her back on eating meat when she was a child Credit: Andrew Crowley I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 12, but while I’ve come close to renouncing my vegetarianism on several occasions, I chickened out because taking up meat at a time when the tide was turning towards vegetarianism felt counter-intuitive. In the past year, some 500,000 Britons have moved to “plant-based” diets, many citing eco reasons for doing so. As a vegetarian of some 20 years’ standing, admittedly it was only in the past decade that I’d pinned my dietary preferences to the planet. But for a girl who’d spent her school years clad in Cotton Traders and playing the bassoon, to feel ahead of the game was a seductive experience. ....

Crucially, the wild insect protein helps to offset the removal of soya from the diet. “I believe this element of the diet is crucial to the flavour, and definitely helps in terms of protein requirements, but the feed ration my supplier has devised is a complete feed in itself.” Mr Chapple also grows multispecies leys and direct drills oats and barley; he is considering producing insects too. “If we can do that within the rules in this country that would be great, but there are some Defra regulations that restrict the use of insects,” he says. ....
Photograph: Glen Burrows The lunge, and indeed the reverse lunge, are fantastic lower-body exercises, but they have one serious flaw – they only require you to move forwards and backwards. That’s a problem since sometimes you’re required to move sideways, because life doesn’t always come at you head on. As well as enlisting a couple of extra muscles on your inner and outer thighs that the forwards-and-backwards lunges can’t reach, the side lunge, or lateral lunge, will also improve sports performance – you’ll be jinking around defenders like Lionel Messi and leaping to make astonishing diving catches like Jonty Rhodes in no time. (We’ll concede the former South African cricketer is not quite as famous as Lionel Messi, but hot damn was he one hell of a fielder. The man must have been side lunging 24/7.) ....
